Great Yarmouth Business News: Business Tweeters celebrate a Year of #GYHour

  • Weekly business Twitter chat #GYHour has reached its one year milestone.
  • 20 attendees from businesses across the borough enjoyed a special cake, anniversary video and new #GYHour website.
  • Guests speakers Brandon Lewis MP and Karen Bradley MP spoke about digital business and organised crime.
  • BDO hosted the #AYearOfGYHour event at their offices in Beacon Park, Gorleston on the 18th August 2014.

Great Yarmouth tweeters gathered to celebrate a year of tweeting, sharing expertise, keeping up with Great Yarmouth business news and finding new contacts on Twitter. Through the enthusiasm of regular contributors to the weekly business chat, #GYHour has boosted the visibility of a wealth of businesses across the borough and beyond.

Brandon Lewis supported the event and described the #GYHour as “fantastic” and wished the group many more happy years tweeting together. Also in attendance was Home Office minister Karen Bradley MP, who shared her insights into modern slavery and cyber crime.

Vick Smith, of social media consultancy GYSocialMedia, started the event as an experiment back in August 2013. Having created the hashtag she encouraged her existing contacts to come along and try out business networking via social media. Local newspaper the Great Yarmouth Mercury picked up on the story and along with Brandon Lewis MP promoted the event that featured over 200 tweets in its first week.

The group also meet face-to-face at Tweetups hosted at the premises of the people who have tweeted on #GYHour. The anniversary celebration was hosted by BDO, organisers of the GYLunchClub, who have supported #GYHour from the very first evening. A special cake featuring a twitter logo and the #GYHour hashtag was presented to Vick Smith by Sara’s Tearooms, who have been also played a key part of the story of #GYHour.

To mark the anniversary, GYSocialMedia have prepared a celebratory video packed with key moments from the group’s first 12 months. GYSocialMedia also unveiled a new website dedicated to #GYHour. Vick Smith said “I hope the site will be a place where people can discover a bit more about GYHour and also how Twitter can help their business.”

Local business people can join #GYHour every Tuesday at 7pm on Twitter or on the GYHour website:
